Besides being an ardent cyclist, Chander is also fond of skiing (first hitting the slopes in Gulmarg, as a schoolkid) and mountaineering - he's made successful attempts on Mt. Rainier and Mt. Shasta, in the USA. He's also participated in a kayaking trip to Greenland, and a hiking and kayaking expedition in Ladakh. Lastly, the multi-adventurous Chander has been certified by PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) as an advanced scuba diver (he's had experience of diving in Thailand, Mexico and Indonesia) .
From: Delhi, IndiaI started cycling in school, when I was in 6th standard - I would ride from my home to my school. As I became more active, I rode for the Delhi state team. In 1982, I took part in the trial games, a qualifying meet for the Delhi Asian Games. I participated in the 200km road race but unfortunately, my bike had a fault; I attempted to ride on but while looking for my team repair vehicle, I crashed into the pilot motorbike - so robbing me of the outside chance to participate in the Asiad! It was the biggest disappointment of my life, and remains a sore memory. Recently, I rode 250km in 12 hours from Jodhpur halfway to Jaisalmer and back, across the Thar Desert, in the Desert 500. But I don't take part in road races now. I regularly ride to work and back - it's the best way to commute for it helps me get in some exercise, and I also end up doing my bit in helping the environment. It's also faster than a car! .
