Amit didn't have to look far for inspiration. His grandfather, Kailash Sankhala, was a celebrated forest officer with the Indian Forest Service and (also) founder director of Project Tiger, launched in 1973 and regarded as one of the most successful programs in the annals of conservation history. His father was a noted wildlife tour operator. Amit has been proudly carrying forward the Sankhala wildlife legacy .
From: Bandhavgarh / Kanha, IndiaSince I was born I knew I wanted to be out in the wilderness - I've been wandering the forests from the time I was a month old! I have travelled the world, and had the fortune of some amazing wildlife sightings. It's hard to pick out just one highlight from my life, having spent hours and hours in the presence of many magnificent animals - tigers, leopards, lions, cheetahs. I have gone snorkelling in the Galapagos and tracked jaguars in the Pantanal (a huge tropical wetland in Brazil), polar bears in Svalbard (an archipelago that's part of Norway) and mountain gorillas in Uganda. But the one experience that probably stands out is when I managed to track the snow leopard in Ladakh. Besides my travels, I have been running Tiger Resorts for 10 years, and am also a trustee of the Tiger Trust .
