Descended from the Thakurs of Shergarh, Moti has been running Manvar Desert Camp & Resort, set amid a cluster of desert villages between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, for more than 15 years. Moti and his team have done plenty, and have done admirably, to protect the ecology of the landscape, besides introducing travellers to the magnificent dunes - and providing them with a desert experience that's authentically, and rurally, Rajasthani .
From: Shergarh, IndiaIt was back in 1996 that I set up my outfit (Manvar) offering camel rides and safaris, and camping in the desert. But I came into Manvar completely by default - I really wanted to get into the civil service! During my childhood, I spent all my holidays in and around Shergarh, Rajasthan, and witnessed many an adventure here. I would spend the summer holidays in Ranthambore National Park with my uncle - my father-s brother - the Late Fateh Singh Rathore, the legendary tiger conservationist who also hailed from Shergarh. It has been a fascinating journey just seeing this operation grow. When we started, there was nothing here. Now, we have many visitors eager to experience the magic of the desert, and the culture of desert life. But we go beyond just offering the jeep and desert safari experience - we assist in conservation efforts of desert wildlife and flora, help train camels, and also make sure that the villagers in the area benefit from the tourist activities .
