A native of Ranikhet, the beautiful hill station and cantonment town in Kumaon (Uttarakhand), Ravi is right in the midst of trekking territory. Indeed, the Himalayas can almost be said to be his backyard, the training ground for his adventurous forays away from home. Ravi is also well versed in the techniques of wilderness first aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) .
From: Ranikhet, Kumaon (Uttarakhand), IndiaWhen I was 16, I saw a small ad in the paper placed by a hiking club. The club was organizing a trek in the Western Ghats. I went along for the trek, and that was my first experience of hiking. I have trekked across the Himalayas, while outside of India I have hiked in the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia, and also in the North Cascades National Park (in the state of Washington, USA). It's difficult to pick out a special memory since I have been trekking now for more than 25 years, but if I had to pick one, it would be when I co-led the Indo-Austrian expedition in the first ascent of the Mamostong Kangri II, in the Great Karakoram range, in 1993. I have also, since 1996, been teaching Glacier Mountaineering and Backpacking, at the National Outdoor Leadership School in the US .
