Vasant knows the trekking trails in the Sahyadris like the back of his hand. Yet it is the Himalayas that provide the setting of his biggest expedition, an attempt on the Kanchenjunga when in his early 20s. Beginning with trekking, Vasant graduated to rock climbing before stints at the mountaineering institute in Manali (basic and advanced courses) helped set him up for a lifetime's acquaintance with mountains .
From: Pune, IndiaI started hiking in the Sahyadris, in the Western Ghats, in 1971, when I was in my teens - my first ever trek was around the hill town of Matheran. Up to 1994, besides leading trekking trips, I led 12 expeditions to the Himalayas - to Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Garhwal, among other locations. I still continue to trek in the Sahyadris, though I now go to the Himalayas only once every two years - I'm not getting any younger! I have also climbed a bit in the Alps, and in the UK - in Scotland, Wales, the Lake District and the Peak District; I was in the UK for a course in mountaineering. But probably the biggest, and most memorable, expedition I went on was in the Himalayas, in 1988, when we made an attempt on the Kanchenjunga from the Nepal side. Leading this 24-man expedition required a huge effort - it was Herculean task that took the team 95 days .
