DAY 02: PHUENTSHOLING TO THIMPHU (164 KM/4.5 HOURS APPROX.)
Before going any further into the kingdom, obtain a permit from the local government. Thereafter, embark on a road journey to Thimphu and on arrival in the city, check-in at the hotel for an overnight stay.

DAY 03: SIGHTSEEING IN THIMPHU

Admire the captivating views of the Thimphu Valley from the highest storey of the BBS Tower. Later, experience ultimate peace inside the meditation hall of Buddha Dordenma – about 169-feet high gilded bronze idol of Lord Buddha. Also, do not miss out on visiting the famous Changlimithang Stadium, which is used for soccer matches and archery competitions.

In the afternoon, make a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, and see a wide collection of intricate paintings and photographs. Thereafter, head to Tashichho Dzong – a fort that now serves as the seat of the government. Complete the Thimphu tour by purchasing fine, local goods from the government-administered Handicrafts Emporium. Later, return to the hotel for an overnight stay.

DAY 04: THIMPHU TO PUNAKHA/WANGDUE VIA DOCHULA PASS
After gaining the necessary permit (not issued on Saturdays, Sundays and government holidays), travel to Punakha/Wangdue. After spending quality time amidst the snow-clad peaks of the Eastern Himalayas, recommence the journey. En route to Punakha/Wangdue you can explore Chimi Lhakhang and the quaint village of Mehsina.

The lhakhang or temple, said to be constructed at the site where a lama caged a demon, houses numerous items used during ceremonies and rituals. On arriving in Punakha, see the decorative sculptures of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, Padmasambhava, Lord Buddha, Avalokitesvara and Goddess Tara at Sangchhen Dorji Lhuedrup Lhakhang Nunnery. In the evening, come back to the hotel in Punakha/Wangdue and stay overnight.
