About Rishikesh

The city of Rishikesh is situated in the lowest reaches of the Himalayan foothills, known as the Shivalik Range. Politically, it lies in the Garhwal Division in the state of Uttarakhand. Rishikesh is considered a sacred place, with numerous references in ancient Hindu scriptures. In the present times, it is known for its hordes of ashrams and Yoga institutes, where tourists come to seek relaxation and spiritual healing.

The hilly terrains of the region are utilised by tour companies to host activities such as rock climbing, rappelling and river-crossing by means of ropes and pulleys. You can also hike through the mountains as they are not too high, and the trails will be somewhat easier to follow. Another adventure sport that has become popular in the town is rafting in the turbulent stretches of Ganga.

While camping in Rishikesh, you may get to see a variety of animals, for the hills around the city are thickly forested and rich in wildlife. Sal, hop bushes and Indian olive are the main tree species dominating the landscape. Some of the wild creatures that you may get to see while camping in the area are Asian elephants, Bengal tigers, otters, clouded leopards, bisons, golden langurs, squirrels, ducks and partridges.
