ITINERARY:
DAY 01: ARRIVAL IN PARO | PARO TO THIMPHU (51 KM/1.25 HOURS) | CITY SIGHTSEEING
On arrival at Paro Airport, meet our representative and begin a road journey to Thimphu. Thimphu – the capital of the Buddhist kingdom – is a picturesque city. High mountains, lush pine trees; and the hissing Thimphu Chu (river) mark the landscape of Thimphu. Mild summers and cold, snowy winters characterise the subtropical highland climate of the region. A number of palaces, museums, Buddhist temples, dzongs and stupas can be visited in and near the Bhutanese capital.
On reaching Thimphu, transfer to the hotel and relax for a while. In the evening, begin your Bhutan weekend adventure tour with a round of local sightseeing. See Tashichho Dzong, a huge fortress that houses the seat of the national government, royal thrones and the offices of the monarch. Also in the evening, pay a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, which is dedicated to Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third king of the country. The chorten or stupa contains beautiful paintings of various Buddhist deities and photos of the emperor.
Buy locally produced objects like cloth paintings, shoes and textiles at the government-run handicrafts emporium and local shops. After sightseeing, return to the hotel for a comfortable overnight stay.
DAY 02: SIGHTSEEING IN THIMPHU | THIMPHU TO PARO
Today, your Bhutan weekend adventure package takes you to more amazing sites in and around the city. Relish breakfast at the hotel, and then visit Motithang Takin Preserve, which seeks to protect the national animal of Bhutan, the takin. Another site that you will visit today is the BBS Tower, which offers panoramic views of the picturesque Thimphu Valley. See a statue of Avalokitesvara that has 11 heads; inscribed prayer wheels and large Buddhist texts at the 12th century Changangkha Lhakhang.
Travel to Buddha Point during the course of the day to see the approximately 169 feet high bronze Buddha Dordenma statue. Also explore Changlimithang Stadium, the centre of sports in the kingdom, while touring the city. The arena is used for football, and more famously for hosting the traditional archery competitions. Later in the day, travel by road to Paro, and upon your arrival here transfer to the hotel for an overnight stay.
DAY 03: PARO SIGHTSEEING
Post a scrumptious breakfast at the hotel, tour the city and the Paro Valley. Later, indulge in some trekking as you make your way through the winding mountainous trails towards Rinpung Dzong. The dzong contains an assembly hall, residence of monks, and numerous Buddhist temples and stupas. In the afternoon, explore the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, where you will be able to see remnants of stone walls. The dzong houses several towers, a central building, called Utse; and other smaller structures. Also during the day, pay homage at Kyichu Lhakhang, a pagoda-style shrine, dating to the 7th century.
