Meghalaya – one of the Seven Sister states in northeast India – is known for its natural splendour and rich culture. This hiking tour in Meghalaya will take you through the state to numerous villages and tourist attractions. The sites that you explore include living root bridges, rock formations, waterfalls, gardens and a cave. You will spend two days in Shillong, the state capital that you can utilise by exploring the city. Once the journey begins, it will lead you to Cherrapunjee, taking you to some incredible natural spots on the way and near the town.
Your hiking experience in Meghalaya will become better when you embark on an exciting trek from Mawlynnong. During the hike, you will get to see the regional fauna and flora from a close distance. This trip will also take you to numerous local villages, where you will witness the rural way of living firsthand.
Itinerary:
Day 01: Arrival in Guwahati | Guwahati to Shillong (approx. 100 km | 2.5 hours)
After arriving at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, meet our representative and travel to Shillong. On reaching the hill station, also the state capital of Meghalaya, transfer to the hotel and enjoy refreshments. In the evening, visit the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, where Latin crosses, stained glass windows and paintings are of special interest.
Thereafter, head to Wards Lake, which has facilities for boating. You can relax or take a walk in the gardens surrounding this artificial pond. Later, spend some time shopping in the famous Police Bazar prior to returning to the hotel to rest at night.
Day 02: Shillong – Cherrapunjee – Langkawet
In the morning, commence the hiking tour in Meghalaya and drive to Cherrapunjee – among the wettest places on earth. En route, visit Shillong Peak to get panoramic views of the Shillong city, and Elephant Falls where the water drops along a series of rocks and boulders.
On reaching Cherrapunjee, explore Mawsmai Cave and see incredible rock formations inside. Thereafter, head to the enchanting Mawsmai Falls –consisting seven falling streams. Later, move to Nohkalikai Falls where a single stream drops from a height of over 1000 feet.
Following a delicious lunch in the town, travel to Thangkharang Park to look far and wide into the plains of Bangladesh. Then, see Ka Khoh Ramhah – a rock looking like an inverted cone. End the sightseeing tour with a visit to Kynrem Falls, which is at his peak during monsoons. Post this excursion, travel to the village of Langkawet for an overnight stay at the campsite.
Day 03: Trip to Mawlynnong
In the morning, embark on a full-day excursion to the cleanest village in Asia – Mawlynnong. During the tour, explore the tiny settlement of Riwai and see the unique living root bridges of Meghalaya. On reaching Mawlynnong, take a walk in its tranquil setting and then relish lunch at a local restaurant.
Following the meal, start the hiking experience in Meghalaya by travelling to the village of Kyndiar on foot. Reach the destination after treading for approximately 1.5 hours through lush rainforests. After the hike, return to the campsite in Langawet to get some sleep.
Day 04: Langawet to Shillong
After breakfast at the campsite, drive to Shillong and once here, check-in at the hotel and relish refreshments. In the evening, you may go on a sightseeing jaunt in the city, follow it up with an overnight stay.
Day 05: Shillong to Guwahati | Departure from Guwahati
Post breakfast, check-out from the hotel and drive to Guwahati. After arriving at the destination, transfer to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport for your onward flight.
