Day wise Itinerary
24th Sep’14: Day 00
In the evening at 5pm we will board the Volvo for Shimla, the former summer capital of the British in India and the current capital of Himachal Pradesh. You will have a few hours to appreciate Delhi’s city bustle before dusk, as the journey will be taken overnight.

25th Sep’14: Day 01
In the morning we will arrive at Shimla (7,234 ft) and check in at the Hotel Holiday Home. You will have time to explore the nuances of green hills, snow-capped mountains and the town’s attractions until the afternoon. Everything in this quaint town has a unique appeal and never fails to impress even the most demanding tourists – from exploring the range of British structures such as the Viceroy Lodge, Gorton Castle and Gaiety Theatre to wandering nonchalantly through the Botanical Gardens or shopping at the Mall. You can even take forest walks through the wooded landscape at Jakhoo Hill if you are feeling adventurous. After lunch a short cycling trip will be arranged to Kufri, a small hill station in the surrounding district. Kufri has a Himalayan Wildlife Zoo which accommodates rare antelopes, felines and birds, including the Himalayan Monal, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh. This could be an interesting addition to the expedition. We will return to Shimla after a total cycling distance of 30kms.

26th Sep’14: Day 02
Transport will be provided from Shimla to Kalpa (7,153ft), a small town in the Sutlej River valley above Recong Peo. After checking into the Hotel Kinner Villa we will have some spare time to explore the surrounding area. This region is famous for its apple orchards which can be deliciously sampled. The town also maintains a certain religious feel, and many temples around Kalpa are dedicated to both Hindu and Buddhist Goddesses which can be refreshing to explore.

27th Sep’14: Day 03
We will move from Kalpa to Reckong Peo where we will start our cycling. The golden morning light touching the mountain peaks is breathtaking, and a perfect start to the day. We will be cycling for 64 kms in and around the mountains until we reach Puh, where we will spend the night in tents.

28th Sep’14: Day 04
In the morning we will begin cycling from Puh to Nako (12,014ft). The village is the highest in the valley and is located near a beautiful mountain lake formed out of masses of ice and snow, adding a special beauty to the place. Small Buddhist temples and sacred rocks, willows and poplars and many yaks, horses and donkeys are some of the delights. We will cover 43 kms before arriving at camp in Nako.

29th Sep’14: Day 05
Allocated as the official rest day, you can enjoy Nako and even take a short walk to the high-altitude Nako lake, which acts as part of the border of the village. Breathe in fresh mountain air while sipping chai or take up a temporary career in photography – the landscape is wonderful. Overnight stay at the camp.

30th Sep’14: Day 06
Leaving behind the relaxed, calm atmosphere of Nako, we slowly descend into Tabo (10,760ft). One of the main highlights of the ancient village is the Tabo Monastery, a sacred place with a series of chortens, temples and caves. Before dinner you will have the opportunity to explore this village and the surrounds a little better. The journey will be 60 km before overnight stay in tents.

01st Oct’14: Day 07
From Tabo we will cycle to Kaza (11,980ft) 48 Kms. On the way at Sichling, we would take transport to the Dhankar Monastery (12774 ft.) The Kaza town sits on the eroded floodplains of the Spiti River. Even though it is the biggest settlement we will encounter on our journey, still the place is relatively small with an easygoing, relaxed pace to the activities. Jagged mountains rising on either side of the river follow the valley floor. The ramshackle bazaar and old whitewashed buildings of Old Kaza cover either side of the stream that runs through the centre of town. Overnight at the camp at Rangrik

02nd Oct’14: Day 08
Visit to Ki Monastery (13,668ft) which is the biggest monastery of Spiti Valley and the religious centre for training of Lamas. Only accessible by the road from the monastery, Kibber Village (14,200ft) is another highlight on the expedition. Throughout the summer, you can take the chance to get a feel of the local agricultural system. Houses are constructed in the traditional Tibetan style, providing a rustic homely feel against the elevated backdrop.  Overnight at Kaza at the camp at Rangrik after a distance of 40 km.

03rd Oct’14: Day 09
We will be driving by vehicle until we reach Losar – from there a short & steep climb to Kunzum Pass which is, at 15060 ft, the gateway to Spiti from Kullu and Lahaul. There is a temple at the top of this pass dedicated to Goddess Durga, which adds to the thrilling experience. The view of the Spiti valley and numerous Chandra-Bhaga range of peaks are breathtaking and the fresh mountain air refreshing. After spending some time at this beautiful place we cycle downhill for 17 km till Batal to conclude the cycling part of the expedition. From Batal we will be driving to Manali via Rohtang Pass, the pass which connects the Zanskar valley in Leh to the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh. The landscape changes dramatically after entering the Lahaul region that lies in rain-path. The brown and arid colours are replaced with lush greenery and cooler temperatures. Travel distance is 120 km

04th Oct’14: Day 10
We have free time till lunch to explore around Manali, a quaint town set inside the shadows of the Himalayas. The towering pine tree forests provide a delightful atmosphere, and walks to the Hadimba or Manu temple give you an opportunity to see more of the town. Shopping opportunities and local food restaurants are the main attractions in town but getting out of the centre can be good – a short walk or tuk-tuk ride will give you a chance to get a feel of the Old Manali section. Late afternoon transport will be provided from Manali to Delhi in the evening by the Volvo bus service.

05th Oct’14: Day 11
Arrive in Delhi just after the sun rise. Reminisce with friends about your wonderful expedition!
