Situated in the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh, India, Pong wetland, originally named Maharana Pratap sagar is one of the largest reservoirs in North India situated on River Beas on the northern edge of Indo Gangetic plain. The lake or Dam is surrounded by the Dhauladhar Mountain ranges. It is a well-known wildlife sanctuary, declared so in 1983, where the environment has made it suitable for various migratory birds to enter the plains of India from Central Asia. Presently over 220 bird species belonging to 54 families have been traced and recorded over the years. Some of the most common and popular bird species seen here include waterfowl, barheaded geese, spot-billed duck, red-necked grebe, black-headed gulls, and black stork among others.

Hence Pong sanctuary has not only been a major habitat for migratory birds in the country but also a prime attraction for bird watchers. Recently Pong wetland has been internationally recognised as one of the finest and biggest wetlands of North India situated in the Shivalik ranges. It is dubbed as an outstanding place for a birding tour. The wetland has rich biodiversity with meagre forests around the zone along with several tree species which serves as edible fruits for migratory birds.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: You arrive in McLeodGanj on day one and check in to the comforts of your hotel. McLeodGanj is a picturesque and serene hill town that makes for a perfect weekend getaway. Get some rest and explore the place on your own. Spend the day visiting the famous Dalai Lama Temple and walk around the interesting Tibetan market. Pick up some local souvenirs for your near and dear ones. Return to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Post an early breakfast, we will go out for our birding spree towards Pong Wetland. En-route we will pass by several small villages such as Sarah and Lunj. Our Birding guide will assist you in spotting birds all through the trails. Then we will go further towards Nagrota Surian and Haripur- Guler where in we will stop for lunch (at your own cost). We will spend some more time locating migratory birds. Later return to McLeodGanj by late evening for an overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3: On this day we will have our breakfast and then check out of the hotel to start the return journey.
