Begin the marvellous sightseeing part of the Srinagar to Manali motorbike trip by exploring the area around Leh. This excursion will take you to Hemis Monastery, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa and Shey Palace.

The widely accepted fact that Hemis Monastery was built in the 11th century makes it among the oldest such Buddhist establishments in all of Ladakh. Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche, whose enormous statue is enshrined in the main assembly hall of the monastery, is the most venerated deity here.

Shey Palace was constructed by King Deldan Namgyal in the 17th century to serve as a summer retreat for his family. A statue of Lord Buddha, approximately 40 feet in height and entirely covered with gold, is the primary attraction here. As it sits atop a high hill, Leh Palace gives panoramic views of the entire city. Apart from the faded, yet breathtaking paintings on the palace walls, ornaments, crowns, and ceremonial dresses, displayed at the on-site museum, are worth admiring.
