Adorned with lush tea gardens, spectacular waterfalls and gushing rivers, Meghalaya is one of the most charming states of Northeast India. The place has a huge tourism potential, and the number of people visiting it has increased in the recent past. With the Meghalaya road trip, you get to explore some of the most remarkable waterfalls in the region. The jaunt also takes you to one of the wettest places on earth – Cherrapunjee. While in this town, you visit some of the most sought-after attractions, namely Thangkharang Park and Ka Khoh Ramhah. This Shillong and Cherrapunjee road trip also allows you to admire the beauty of Mawlynnong – the cleanest village in Asia.
Itinerary:
Day 01: Arrival in Guwahati | Guwahati to Shillong (approx. 100 km | 2.5 hours)
Arrive at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, and then drive to Shillong. Upon reaching the hill station, transfer to the hotel and check-in. Enjoy refreshments, and if time permits then go for a sightseeing excursion to some prominent sites in the area. The first place to visit is the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians.
Commonly known as Shillong Cathedral, it is one of the oldest churches in the region. This site holds special services on every Wednesday and is of great religious significance to the local Christians. After this, move to the famous Police Bazar for some shopping. This place buzzes with tourists and locals and is ideal to buy some souvenirs. Later, move back to the hotel and enjoy a refreshing sleep.
Day 02: Shillong to Cherrapunjee (approx. 67 km | 2 hours) | Living Root Bridge Trek or Sightseeing
Post breakfast, this Meghalaya road trip takes you to Cherrapunjee, one of the most humid places on earth. Upon arrival here, transfer to the resort to rest for some time, and then embark on a trekking expedition. Travelling a distance of around 4 km and going up approximately 1000 feet in altitude, explore the stunning forest area near the resort. The highlight of these forests is the presence of living root bridges that are endemic to Meghalaya.
Post admiring the naturalistic skill of the locals, move back to the resort for some leisure time. In the evening, enjoy a music performance by local singers, and then rest.

While driving from Shillong to Cherrapunjee, visit Shillong Peak to enjoy panoramic views of the city, and Elephant Falls. After arrival at your destination, embark on a sightseeing jaunt to Mawsmai Falls, Mawsmai Cave and Nohkalikai Falls. Following lunch in Cherrapunjee, continue the sightseeing tour and move to Thangkharang Park to relish scenic views of the lush plains of Bangladesh. Later, travel to Ka Khoh Ramhah and Kynrem Falls.
Also known as Mothorp or Pillar Rock, Ka Khoh Ramhah is a giant cone-shaped rock formation, adjacent to an enchanting waterfall. One of the highest waterfalls in Meghalaya, Kynrem Falls has become a prominent attraction. The water, gushing down from the top of the hill, forms a mist, adding to the charm of the area. After admiring these sites, transfer to the resort for an overnight stay.
Day 03: Cherrapunjee to Shillong
After a sumptuous breakfast, explore some local attractions, and later return to Shillong. Upon arrival in the city, transfer to the hotel and rest for the night.
Day 04: Shillong – Mawlynnong – Shillong
Enjoy a delicious breakfast, and then drive to Mawlynnong. Dubbed as the cleanest village in Asia, Mawlynnong is a small settlement in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. Promoting ecotourism and boasting of a perfect literacy rate, the site has become an ideal example for other villages. Enjoy the day, roaming around in the streets of the village and admiring its beauty. Thereafter, head back to Shillong for an overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 05: Shillong to Guwahati | Departure from Guwahati (approx. 100 km | 2.5 hours)
After breakfast, drive to Guwahati to end this Shillong and Cherrapunjee road trip. Upon arrival at your destination, transfer to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to board the flight for your onward journey.
