This Pondicherry backpacking tour from Mumbai brings you to Chennai first, and then gives you the chance to travel on one of the most picturesque roads in India – East Coast Road. Officially State Highway 49 and commonly known as ECR, this road connects Chennai to Cuddalore, passing through Pondicherry. It is an absolute delight to be riding on this road, with the Bay of Bengal for company throughout the way.

Your day in the city will be packed with fun and adventure as you travel to the Paradise Beach Island, explore Auroville, Aurobindo Ashram, among other significant landmarks of the place, while backing through Pondicherry.
As your backpack trip to Pondicherry continues, you travel to Mahabalipuram and spend some time exploring the place, post which we take you back to Chennai to have a relaxed evening visiting the Marina Beach. The trip ends as you catch the train back to Mumbai from Chennai.
Day 1: Train Journey from Mumbai to Chennai (11th August - Friday)
Pondicherry backpacking tour starts in Mumbai from where you board the Chennai Express. The journey starts from Dadar station at 8:30 PM and takes about 23 hours to complete.
Day 2: Arrival in Chennai | Onward Journey to Pondicherry (12th August - Saturday)
You arrive in Chennai by late evening and straight away proceed towards Pondicherry, taking the East Coast Road. This 3 hours’ drive seems right out of a dream, when you hear the sound of the waves every now and then. After reaching Pondicherry, check-in to the hotel, freshen up, have dinner, and hit the bed by midnight.
Day 3: Exploring Pondicherry (13th August - Sunday)
Start your day early and have breakfast. The day ahead is packed with many activities so we leave the hotel to ferry a speed boat to take us to the Paradise Island Beach by 7:00 AM. The time at the Island will be full of fun. We leave the Island by 9:30 AM and have a quick bite on the way, post which we head out to marvel at the most popular tourist spot in all of Pondicherry – Auroville. It is a spiritual hub that houses the very famous Matri Mandir, also called the soul of the city. This place is sure to provide solace and peace to the weary traveller in you!
After lunch, we head out to the Auro Beach followed by a visit to the Aurobindo Ashram. Late afternoon is reserved for admiring the structural beauty the French left behind in the form of Churches and French Headquarters. The day ends at the very serene Promenade by the sea, which is followed by an authentic Chettinad Dinner. You reach the hotel by 11:00 PM, and we recommend that you retire at the earliest as the next day begins early too!
Day 4: Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram | Mahabalipuram to Chennai (14th August - Monday)
The day begins at 6:00 AM and you are treated to a delicious breakfast at a French Café in Pondicherry. We begin the day by visiting the Vinayagar Temple and then leave for Mahabalipuram. The journey takes about 2 hours to complete and you are there by around 10:30 AM. The first part of the day is spent exploring the city, with a lunch break of course!
The evening gets exciting as we head to a Crocodile Park called the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust. It houses a wide variety of snakes, frogs and lizards, in addition to crocs. We reach Chennai before sunset and spend the evening at Marina Be ach looking at the evening hues of the sky. You have a few hours to explore the city and perhaps indulge in some shopping. Reach the hotel by 9:00 PM and have dinner after freshening up, before you call it a day.
Day 4 and 5: Journey from Chennai to Mumbai (15th August – Tuesday to 16th August - Wednesday)
Leave the hotel in the wee hours to board your train back to Mumbai. You leave Chennai at 6:50 AM and reach Mumbai the next morning at 6:00 AM.
