You can go for the Kanamo Peak trek to make a short holiday in Himachal Pradesh extremely exciting and eventful. At about 5974 metres above sea level, Kanamo is the highest mountain in the Spiti Valley. Still, it is one of those peaks that can be climbed without hardcore mountaineering knowledge or experience. The trip begins from Kaza – the administrative centre of the valley – and it will first take you to the famous Ki Monastery. See the incredible wall paintings here, and later drive towards the village of Kibber. Located at an altitude of approximately 14200 feet, Kibber is one of the highest permanently inhabited human settlements on earth.
Following an overnight homestay in the village, start the Kanamo Peak trekking excursion by walking towards its base camp. Along the way, see how the grassy patches provide a scenic contrast to the almost-barren mountains of the region. Take proper rest on reaching the basecamp, and start preparing for the ultimate climb to the top. Make the ascent carefully, and after enjoying your success and looking at the region from the peak, head back to the basecamp. On reaching the campsite, travel to the Kaza town by road and end this wonderful trip.
There are some important things to keep in mind before beginning a trek to Kanamo Peak or to any other place. A hiking excursion, whether long or short is always slightly demanding, so start exercising way before starting it. Though you will get a day in Kaza and Kibber to acclimatise, it is essential that you do something to make your breathing a bit stronger. Kaza is itself about 12000 feet above sea level, and you will feel the oxygen level diminish here too. So it is highly essential not to run around, jump or exert too much in such high altitudes and tough environmental conditions.
Get yourselves checked by a doctor, if possible, prior to undertaking a trek to Mount Kanamo. Make sure that no breathing problems or heart conditions exist because they will seriously hamper your plans. Also make sure that your arm and leg joints are in prime conditions as the climb will be quite demanding. Carry sufficient warm clothes even if going in summers because the altitude of Kibber, Kaza and the peak keep the weather there considerably cold.

Day 01: Kaza to Kibber | En route Visit to Ki Monastery
In the morning, begin the Kanamo Peak trekking tour by undertaking a dramatic road journey from Kaza through the Spiti Valley to reach the village of Kibber.
En route, visit Ki Monastery – constructed in the 11th century. The buildings of the complex are built on contours, carved along the slopes of a barren and rocky hill, which overlooks the splendid Spiti River. Intricate wall paintings, religious texts and images of Lord Buddha are the highlights of the monastery. Post exploring the monastery, continue the drive to Kibber and on reaching here, take a tour of this serene village. Later, transfer to the homestay for the night.
Day 02: Kibber to Kanamo Base Camp (4-5 hours)
Early morning, begin the preliminary stage of the trek to Kanamo Peak by hiking to the base camp of the mountain. Remember to capture the beauty of the Lahaul and Spiti region in your camera and memory as you walk along. There would be patches of green grass on the mostly barren valley floor, and the high mountains may even have some snow on top. Following an on-foot journey of about 5 hours, arrive at Kanamo Peak trek base camp and rest at the site.
Day 03: Mount Kanamo Base Camp – Mount Kanamo Summit – Kaza (7 hours)
Prepare yourselves mentally for the trek to Mount Kanamo for it is going to be a demanding affair. Post preserving some energy, make the final ascent and on completing it, celebrate your success and look down at the Spiti Valley from the summit. The hard part is over here, and the next part of this expedition requires descending back to the basecamp.
After completing the downhill journey, travel to the town of Kaza.
