Trekking in Spiti Valley

The northern part of the Indian subcontinent presents a perfect location to those, who want to go for trekking. And among various states, Himachal Pradesh, and specifically the Spiti Valley, gains most of the tourist attention. Trekking in Spiti Valley takes travellers to many mesmerising lakes and peaks. Spiti Valley treks are also favoured by tourists as these jaunts provide excellent opportunities to relish serene nature.

Earlier, due to underdeveloped infrastructure, people hesitated in undertaking treks in Spiti Valley, but with the speedy establishment of roads, this place has become a prominent destination for such expeditions. While trekking Spiti Valley, you come across grand Buddhist monasteries where you can learn in detail about the religion. Another reason why Spiti Valley trekking is dear to hikers is that this area is easily accessible, unlike the relatively remoter places in some other Indian states.

Bestowed with many spectacular hill stations, infinite mountain peaks and charming valleys, Himachal Pradesh is one of the top summer getaway destinations in India. Another thing that draws hordes of tourists to this place is the adventurous sports organised and offered here. Apart from paragliding, angling, skiing and mountaineering, trekking in Spiti Valley has become popular among locals and globetrotters. The state of Himachal Pradesh has many locations that are good for the sport, but the Spiti area has emerged as a favourite.

Popular Treks in Spiti Valley

By embarking on treks in Spiti Valley, you get to explore every aspect of the charming place. The Chandratal Lake trek allows you to completely relish the beauty of a spectacular waterbody. Two other Spiti Valley treks that a large number of tourists avail are the jaunts to Beas Kund and Parang La. The Parang La trek is a nine-day excursion that takes you to a height of over 18000 feet above sea level. It begins in Kaza – the sub-divisional headquarters of the region – and takes you to Kibber, one of the highest settlements on earth. The demanding phase of this outing begins when you start travelling from Thaltak Meadow to Parang La. On the fourth day of the hike, you reach the summit of the pass. From here, you get some sights of the underlying valley that are worth capturing in your cameras.

But if trekking Spiti Valley is on your mind and a week-long trip is something that you cannot adjust in your schedule, then opt for the Kanamo Peak trek. Taking tourists to an altitude of almost 20000 feet, this trek is one of the most favoured short outings in the area. The itinerary of this venture also includes a trip to Ki Monastery, where you can appreciate incredible wall paintings. All the above-mentioned trips offer you panoramic views of the region from different angles.

If nature is your pick and you want a jaunt to witness it at its best, then embark on the Chandratal Lake Trek and make memories for a lifetime. Meaning the Lake of the Moon, the waterbody is situated at an altitude of around 14000 feet. Unlike most of the other on-foot excursions that begin from a town or village, this one begins from the well-known hill station – Manali. Spending nights at Chika, Balu ka Gera and some other campsites will give you a whole new perspective on nature. The jaunt ends when you move back to Manali, passing through the en route Baralacha La and Rohtang La.
