Located on the outskirts of Nagarhole National Park, Kabini River Lodge is truly a home away from home. Built during the Colonial era as the hunting property of the former emperor of Mysore, this 54-acre estate will give you a feeling of grandeur. It is no wonder that this property, now owned by the Karnataka Government, has been rated among the best nature resorts in India. The dammed Kabini River, which the lodge is located in front of, gives it the name. Your senses will automatically draw you here when you feel like leaving your hectic life for a while, because such is the charm and the atmosphere here.

At Kabini Jungle Lodge, you can opt for comfortable rooms or tents for a little bit of adventure. The main Colonial-style building of the estate is big enough to play host to 50 guests at a time. A total of 14 amply-spaced rooms with king-size double beds and basic amenities wait patiently for you to stay. Alternatively, the property also has six separate cottages with twin beds, perfect for friends. The rooms have smooth tiled floors and high ceilings, typical of grand mansions of the days gone by. All rooms and tents have attached bathrooms, but no televisions. Anyway, you do not want to stay confined to your rooms watching TV when you should be outside looking at the surroundings. For your indulgence, this jungle lodge in Kabini also has a well-stocked bar, housed inside the Viceroy Building. Thinking of organising meetings or other official events? Ask the management to equip their conference room with multimedia projector and other equipment as per your requirement.

As with other such resorts of the Karnataka Government, the large circular gazebo, which acts as the primary dining area here, is named Gol Ghar. Relish lavish buffets of Indian, Tandoori, Chinese and Continental menus while gazing at the wonderful world outside. A wildlife safari at Kabini is a must as the area is home to a large number of species of animals and birds. Perhaps before heading to the jungles, you may want to watch a wildlife documentary at the audio-visual hall of the estate. After a long and tiring nature walk, help yourself to a relaxing Ayurvedic massage at the on-site spa. Last but not the least, bring your wonderful day to a closure with a barbecue extravaganza, accompanied by a bright and warm bonfire in the evening.

Distance:
Nagarhole National Park lies roughly 92 km from the popular hill station of Madikeri. The city of Mysore is at an approximate distance of 53 km from the protected territory, and it has good road, air and rail connectivity to the rest of India. Bengaluru, about 218 km from Kabini River Lodge, is perhaps the best city to use as a gateway to come here. Kempegowda International Airport in the city can be reached by flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur, Mumbai, Paris, Middle East, London, Southeast Asia, Colombo and several other places. You may also come to Nagarhole National Park via Mangalore, which is around 226 km from here and has regular flights and trains to Mumbai and Delhi.

Activities:
While at Kabini Jungle Lodge, you may tour the forests in a number of ways as per your desire. Jeep safari is the most preferred activity here to spot animals like tigers, elephants, Indian bisons, leopards, wild dogs, jackals, grey mongooses, sloth bears, boars and several species of deer. During a wildlife safari at Kabini, you may also sight hyenas, black-naped hares, mouse deer, red giant flying squirrels, Indian pangolins and porcupines. Birdwatching is another great engagement here, and species like Oriental white-backed vultures, spotted eagles, Nilgiri wood pigeons, ibises, darters and grey head fish eagles are abundant here. Some other birds of the area are red-headed vultures, blue-winged parakeets, white-bellied tree pies, white-cheeked barbets, Malabar whistling thrushes, Indian scimitar babblers and Malabar grey hornbills. You could also hike through the foothills of the Western Ghats or go on a motorboat or coracle ride on the river.

Season:
This jungle lodge in Kabini can be visited in any month, but summers provide the greatest chance of spotting animals. The scorching sun dries up the ponds and water reservoirs, so most animals are drawn to the river to drink water. As the monsoons fill the water bodies again, there are fewer chances of animal sighting then, whereas in winters, such chances are again good.
