Shoghi is a small suburban town in the district of Solan in Himachal Pradesh. This scenic hill station, located at an approximate altitude of 1790 m above sea level, is an ideal destination for solitude seekers and nature lovers. The town lies at a distance of about 13 km from Shimla on NH-22, which is also called as Shimla-Ambala Highway. Surrounded by lush oak and rhododendron trees, this hill station is famous for its paradise-like surroundings and pleasant climate. It offers some of the most astonishing views of the mighty Himalayas as well.
The town is known for its various locally produced fruit products like juices, pickles, jellies and syrups. It is fondly called as the temple town, owing to the presence of a number of ancient temples. One of the famous ones is the Hanuman Temple, which was in ruins for many years before being renovated in recent times. Located in a green valley, this revered shrine is popular for its beautifully coloured wall paintings, depicting various interesting scenes from the Hindu mythology. Locals believe that praying at this old temple brings happiness, prosperity and good health.
Another popular point of interest to explore while in Shoghi is the Jakhu Hill, which lies near Shimla. This hill is home to one of the famous and ancient temples in the region – the Jakhu Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. One has to trek up the hill to reach this temple. The view from the top of the hill is simply stunning. Kali Bari Temple is another famous attraction near Shoghi that lies on top of a lush green hillock, which has an elevation of more than 2590 m above sea level. The temple is said to be more than 150 years old and is dedicated to Hindu goddesses. This beautiful, old shrine and its natural surroundings make it an interesting site to visit. Similarly popular shrine in this region is the Tara Devi Temple, which is said to be over 200 years old. It lies at a distance of only 4 km from Shoghi.
Besides temples, one can visit the Park Woods, which spans more than 5 acres and is surrounded by rhododendron, pine and oak trees in abundance. In these woods, several rare herb species are found. It also serves as a home to a variety of birds as well as bark deer and rabbits. This place lies about 3 km from the town of Shoghi.
In addition to sightseeing, the hill station of Shoghi offers opportunities for various adventure activities to thrill-seeking enthusiasts. Hiking, trekking and camping are some of the most popular adventure sports to take part in this place. Those, who do not wish to take part in venturesome activities can simply relax and unwind amidst the picturesque beauty of this place. The small town is also popular as a birdwatcher’s paradise.

The culture of Shoghi can be well ascertained from its fairs, festivals, dance, language, music, art and craft, and lifestyle. The two prominent religions followed in Shoghi are Hinduism and Buddhism. One of the most celebrated festivals in the town is Shivratri. Tribal music and folk dance of Shoghi is quite popular in Himachal Pradesh, especially Rasa Dance and Rakshasa Dance. The locals predominantly speak Pahari language, followed by Hindi and English. Similar to other hill stations of this region, the people of Shoghi lead a simple life and are known for their warm hospitality.
Shoghi can be visited all across the year as the weather conditions remain ideal and pleasant. However, the best time to come to this town is between March and June. One can also plan a trip to this place in the month of October to see the people in the town celebrating the Maa Tara Devi Festival in full glory.
History
Much is not known about the early history of this town. Its references can be found in context to the Anglo-Gurkha War, which was fought in the 19th century. In 1815, the Gurkhas were defeated in this war by the chieftains, who had joined the British side. After the loss, the Gurkhas were forced to sign the Treaty of Sanjauli. Later, the Shimla region, which Shoghi was part of then, came under the rule of Maharaja of Patiala, who was rewarded for his service to the British.

From this airport, one can avail taxi service to reach Shoghi. The nearest international airport to this destination is Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
By Rail – The closest railway station to this place is in Kalka, which is at a distance of approximately 90 km. This station receives passenger and express trains and is well connected to major cities of North India. Bus and taxi services are available from Kalka Railway Station to Shoghi.
By Bus – This small town is connected to all major cities of the state by regular bus service, courtesy Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC). Those planning to come from Delhi by road need to first travel to Shimla by bus, since the latter city is about 14 km away from Shoghi. On reaching Shimla, one can hire a private taxi to continue the journey.
